Gandhi Jayanti

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi known as, father of nation, for India was born on 2nd October, 1869. Each year 2nd October is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti and is declared as a nationwide holiday.
Gandhi bought a revolution in world with his theory of nonviolence and proved it the world that non violence can transform the society and make people stand up together against the evil.

Gandhi fondly called as Bapu meaning father in India led the independence fight in India from the front and finally the British gave up on 15th August,1947. Gandhi also led Indians in South Africa to stand up and fight against the policy of Apartheid. He was a firm believer of truth and non violence. He used to preach simple living and high thinking. He claimed for a modern society which had no place for caste system, more liberal women rights, self reliance and humanity. His movements of Satyagraha and Quit India had quite an impact on then ruling British.

Gandhi was murdered on 30th January 1948 by Nathu Ram Godse. His ideals and vision continue to inspire the Indian society and the world. Great leaders of the world have acknowledged his contribution to the world and bow to his preachings. Gandhi Jayanti marks the day when he is remembered. His memorial is known as Rajghat in Delhi and has words – Hey Ram meaning Oh God mentioned on it.

On this day of Gandhi Jayanti several politicians visit Raj Ghat and pay homage to Gandhi with flowers. Prayers, prayer meetings are held as tribute all over the country. His teachings are recalled in presentations and seminars. There are several awards distributed to people for their contributions to society. There are feature films featuring his life which are premiered everywhere. Not only India but the whole world celebrates the day as a day of nonviolence. Days before Gandhi Jayanti, schools celebrate the spirit of Gandhian values by organizing essay writing competitions, enacting role plays and inviting children to uphold those teachings in their daily lives. Gandhi’s favourite song “ Raghupati raghav raja ram” is played in prayer sessions.

The whole country showers its love and respect for Gandhi, Till this date, there are people all over the world who continue to work selflessly inspired from the spirit Gandhi worked on. They do social service and their acts of generosity have the spirit of Gandhi Jayanti in them each day they choose to be closer to humanity by serving them selflessly. Gandhi made every person realize his potential which is huge, to believe in one’s ideals and believes and continue working towards what you think is right. The country bows down to him on Gandhi Jayanti, fondly remembering him and rejuvenating with his presence which can be just felt.
